It’s a little wonder that Wales has become such a popular walking destination over the years. Over 500,000 people visiting Wales each year to hit the many trails and routes enjoying the breathtaking scenery and taking in the fresh welsh air along the way. Rural footpaths will lead you down to gentle stretches of coastline and cliff top paths where access to secluded coves can be found. Away from the coastline an extensive footpath network exists to cater for all your walking needs. Families and the more casual walker can follow one of the many forest trails or way marked walks besides rivers and lakes leading to beautiful water falls and over the hills. The more experienced or enthusiastic walker can tackle some of the more exhilarating terrain and mountain paths. There are three National trails in Wales. Walkers are able to tackle shorter stretches of these longer paths.

The Escape at Pennal is ideally placed for walking and is an ideal touring base for many local walks, some starting from our very own doorstep, and has many other routes and trails within easy travelling distance.

Examples of some of these routes are given below:

Glyndwr’s way

One of the National trails, as mentioned above and is a 132 mile trek through the Welsh rebels heartland over hills, plush woodland, gentle country lanes and through the mountains where Glyndwr and his army slept. Owain Glyndwr is a true Welsh hero. He led the last Welsh fight for independence in the 15th century and set up a Welsh parliament at Machynlleth and went within a whisker of toppling the English crown of Henry IV. When the tide turned and his enemies drew near he disappeared into thin air, never to be seen or heard from again. The location of his final resting place is hidden behind a web of intrigue and myth. The walk is ideal for people of all ages and abilities and is easy to follow with plenty of pointers along the way marking each twist and turn of the route. The route begins in Knighton on the English Border and passes through villages to Abbeycwmhir, Llanidloes, Machynlleth, Llanbrynmair and Meifod before ending in North Powys at Welshpool. Pennal to Aberdyfi

From the village, you can walk right up into the hills and across to Aberdyfi taking in some spectacular views of the Dyfi valley and passing Carn March Arthur and the mythical Bearded lake on your way.

Pennal walks

There are other walks in and around Pennal taking you through the forest located behind The Escape at Pennal and in a loop and back down into the village.
